在中国当今社会，出现了这样一种新的现象，一方面，发展中社会面临的种种问题与困境，如贫富分化、官员腐败、社会不公与种种矛盾，使传统的观念型知识分子有了以道德理念的话语权利来进行诠释的巨大机会，这就会使他们追求完美的“乌托邦情结”仍然有着用武之地；另一方面，市场经济的世俗化过程，又使那些崇尚务实与稳健，但缺乏道德激情与社会批判精神的中产阶级不断强大起来。
　　中国在现阶段的进步，实在需要这两种人的相互补充与支持。如果每个中国知识分子能在保持他的道德热情的同时，又能以一个专业人员那样的方式，而不是以哲学家和诗人的方式来考虑中国问题，如果中国新兴的中产阶级在求得自身发展的同时，能多一点社会关怀，中国就可能一方面避免以激进的乌托邦来主宰人们对问题的思考，另一方面又会以渐进、稳健、务实、妥协与宽容的精神，来选择我们民族的前途。
