Just finished watching “Wild At Heart”. The Lynchian world is a strange one indeed. The characters are all caricatures. but the ones that are somehow most interesting are the bit roles that often don’t even have lines: the weird characters that sometimes serve only as transitions from one scene to another. These are people that look like non-actors–and they seem to be plucked from the ranks of midgets, mentally ill people, or just random elderly people whose faces and expressions–and minute actions–are mini-dramas in themselves, buried within the larger framework of the film. Strange cumulative effect it all has: an alternate universe. Sometimes you don’t know what it is happening and feel like you’ve lost your bearing in some Lynchian terra incognita, and other times it seems all too familiar.
